Solvent effect on infrared frequencies : complexing of phenol with esters
Department of Physics, Annamalai University, Annamalainagar, South India.
In continuation ot an earlier investigation, the hydrogen bonding ability of several esters with phenol was studied and from the observed frequency shifts the structure of the complexes formed is discussed. From the knowledge of the formation constants for 1 : 1 and 1: 2 complexes and the relative abundance of the free and complexed carbonyl bands, the spectra of 1: 1 and 1: 2 complexes were calculated. From the integrated intensity measurements, the changes in dipolemoments of the free and complexed C = O bonds were determined and the values obtained were discussed in relation to mesomeric and steric influences on G = O bonds.
