Studies on intervalence-transfer absorption
Part I : Polynuclear cobalt complexes
Department of Chemistry, University College of Science, Calcutta-9, India,
Inde.
The optical intervalence-transfer absorption bands have been located in decamine — μ-peroxo cobalt (III) — cobalt (IV) nitrate, octamino — μ-amino peroxo cobalt (III) — cobalt (IV) chloride and tetraethylene diamine diaquotetrol cobalto-dicobalti chloride. Theoretical calculation from the experimental band intensity and band width data shows that there is very little electron delocalization from donor to acceptor in the ground state. The energy necessary to bring about intervalence transfer from donor to acceptor thermally have been estimated from the electronic conductivity data at different temperatures. It has been observed that the theoretical relation Eop = 4 Eth is fairly well valid in these systems.
